The Croton Lions Club will participate in I Love My Park Day, May 2 (rain date May 3), at the Old Croton Aqueduct hiking and biking trail by removing invasive plants, bushes, small trees and tree strangling vines. Participants will learn how to identify the targeted invasive species and how to manage them by pulling, digging them up by the roots or cutting them. They will work in teams, guided by an experienced naturalist who will demonstrate the most effective techniques. Projects will be available for all ages and skill levels, no experience necessary.
What should volunteers bring?
Water bottle, garden gloves, sunscreen, insect repellant, hat. Although gloves and tools will be available on site, volunteers are encouraged to bring their favorite tools for removing weeds, including loppers and pruners. Bring lunch if staying for the entire day.
Location
Look for "Park Here" signs on the west side of Quaker Bridge Road, between houses #120 and #99, Croton on Hudson. Lat 41.202971 Long -73870666. A white canopy and banners on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail will be visible from the road. Using GPS will help you avoid approaching the currently closed Quaker Bridge.
Family Friendly Projects
Family friendly projects are traditionally available at our event led by experienced crew leaders, skilled at working with families and children. There are some very identifiable plants that are easy to pull, and some that can be dug out with small hand tools. This is very empowering and satisfying work for youngsters.
Additional Information
There will be a free raffle/prize drawing at lunch time. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from experienced naturalists regarding managing invasive plants and to enjoy camaraderie of the volunteers who come from far and wide while making the trail safer for those who use it, including native plants and wildlife.
