Croton Lions Initiate New Service: Lions See

One hundred years ago Helen Keller challenged Lions to become knights of the blind. Lions have responded by providing eyeglasses, vision screenings, and cataract surgeries to millions all over the world. Our hearts of service continue to bring light to the darkness every day.

The Croton Lions Club is initiating a new service called Lions SEE (Screening Eyes Early). This is a special program to screen children for vision problems that can lead to Amblyopia and possible blindness. With parental permission, our trained Lion members use a special, non-invasive camera-like scanner. The scanner indicates “Pass” (no action necessary) or “Refer” (refer for further evaluation by an eye care professional).

On February 26, 2026, Croton Lions Club worked with Croton Community Nursery School, our pilot school for Lions SEE. During our visit we scanned 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds. Students were very cooperative and were able to keep a steady look at the happy face on the scanner. All received a “Spike the Lion” sticker (above) in appreciation of their efforts.

This is just the beginning. We hope to expand our service to other preschools at no cost to families or schools.

Thanks to Croton Community Nursery School and our Croton Lions SEE three-member team: Kathy Gaughran, Lions SEE District R1 Director, Phyllis Cobb, former CHHS nurse and Leslie Anderson, Croton Lions Club events and membership chair.

The article below is a personal story of a family whose children’s sight was saved because of this simple vision scanning program.
